Cantine Olivella, in the Neapolitan area of Sant'Anastasia, takes its name from the nearby Olivella spring.
In Roman times, this part of Italy was known for producing fine wines.
In 1974, at the slope of Monte Somma close to the spring, a fragment of a Roman earthenware wine jug was discovered. The jug carries an abbreviated inscription, Sextus Catius Festus, along with a seal depicting a stylized leaf, similar to a heart. This seal has since become the logo for Cantine Olivella.
The winery produces wine from forgotten indigenous varietals such as Catalanesca, Caprettone and Piedirosso.
The grapes are grown on volcanic soil at 450 metres above sea level and produce intriguing wines full of character.
